Roan Mountain, TN: Katie + Tim's Adventurous Mountaintop Engagement Session

Katie and Tim are such a laid-back, sweet, and genuine couple. It feels like yesterday that I received an inquiry from Katie asking me to be a part of their upcoming wedding day!

These two met back in 2012 and had their first date at a Japanese restaurant in Providence, Rhode Island, and have been together ever since! At the time, Tim was in his second year at Brown University and Katie was working at Rhode Island Hospital in asthma research. Four years later, Tim proposed to Katie on a break from school to celebrate Katie’s sister’s wedding in Maine. They decided to take their own trip after the wedding to a small town called Kingfield, Maine and stayed at a cute bed and breakfast. Since the two had been so busy with school, Katie was really un-suspecting of the proposal! I’ll let them tell the story from here:

“ We knew we wanted to go hiking, so we decided on Little Bigelow as our first adventure. Once we made it to the top, Katie was taking pictures of the views and taking in its beauty when she turned around to see Tim down on one knee with a ring. She was very surprised! She immediately said yes and could not stop smiling and they took a picture at the top of the mountain to commemorate the moment.”

Since Katie and Tim got engaged on top of Little Bigelow, it was only fitting that they also get married in the mountains! Katie and Tim are getting married at Roan Mountain State Park, but wanted to explore the park on their wedding day, so we decided to do their engagement up on the epic balds. We met up on a somewhat cold and blustery day in the Spring and had a blast talking about the different kinds of trees and plant life on the balds! I loved exploring with these two and cannot wait for their wedding day!

Roan Mountain, TN: Melanie + Dave's Nature Inspired Intimate Mountaintop Wedding

Melanie and Dave are both arborists, so it was only fitting that their vows were read on a mountaintop surrounded by their closest family. We met up on a warm, hazy, Saturday at the end of May, and big puffy clouds were rolling across a clear blue sky. After becoming husband and wife, someone spotted a rainbow in the distance! We ran over and snagged a few photos with it in the background before the rainbow disappeared— definitely a first for me on Roan! After enjoying the rainbow, we hiked the trail around the balds taking photos and watched the sun set behind Roan High Knob.

I kicked off the year with Ashley and Logan’s engagement session, and let me say- we started with a bang! I’ve wanted to shoot on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a few years now, and when I first pitched a list of locations to Ashley, I was silently hoping they’d pick the parkway. Needless to say, they made my parkway dreams come true! We had a blast laughing and hiking up to the view! I just love how these two make each other smile and laugh constantly. They are absolutely perfect for each other and it’s so easy to see just how much they care one another.

Adventurous Weddings + Elopements: How to Respect the Great Outdoors on Your Wedding Day (Leave No Trace)

Adventurous Weddings + Elopements: How to Respect the Great Outdoors on Your Wedding Day (Leave No Trace)

It’s no secret that I hike and shoot a lot of weddings and engagements up on Roan Mountain and other scenic locations. I often feel a smidge of guilt bringing weddings and guests to these locations, simply because that’s bringing more opportunity to wear down the terrain, annoy hikers, or potentially leave pieces of litter behind, etc. However, I’m also a believer in sharing these beautiful places and trails, because nature is meant to be enjoyed! I try my best to adhere to Leave No Trace’s 7 principles and to always leave a place, “better than we found it,” and to, “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.” If you’re a newbie to hiking and the outdoors, most hikers live by the Leave No Trace code- 7 principles to remember while hiking, enjoying the outdoors, or planning your adventurous wedding!
